The patient just wanted his smile back
One of the things I enjoy most about dentistry is hearing people's stories. Every patient comes in for treatment, but behind that treatment is usually a reason that has very little to do with teeth.
This patient stayed with us because his goal was never to have the perfect smile. He wanted to feel comfortable smiling again. When we first met, he told us that after raising their children, he and his wife had finally started travelling.
Like so many parents, he had spent years putting everyone else first. Looking after his family always came before looking after himself, and over time his dental health became something he kept postponing.
Eventually, he reached a point where he felt it was finally time to invest in himself.
He Wasn't Looking for the Cheapest Treatment
Before coming to us, he had done what most people do. He researched different clinics, compared options across the UK and also looked into treatment abroad.
The lower prices caught his attention, but they weren't what mattered most. He told me he wasn't looking for the cheapest solution. He wanted to know that whoever treated him genuinely cared about doing things properly and would create something that would last.
That conversation was important because it's exactly how we see dentistry too. Good treatment isn't about finding the quickest or cheapest answer.
His Biggest Request Was Surprisingly Simple
During his consultation, I asked him what kind of result he was hoping for. His answer couldn't have been clearer..
"I don't want a Hollywood smile. I just want my smile, only healthier."
I loved hearing that because our job isn't to make everyone look the same. Every smile has its own character, and whenever possible, we want to preserve that.
After everything was finished, his youngest daughter saw him and said, "Perfect. That's still you."
For him, that was the best compliment he could have received.
The Surgery Was Easier Than He Expected
Like many patients, he admitted he was nervous before surgery. Afterwards, he told me it was nowhere near as difficult as he had imagined.
As expected, there was some swelling and discomfort that lasted a few days after the surgery - healing always takes patience, but overall, our patient felt relieved as the recovery was not as difficult for him.
Knowing what to expect also made a huge difference because there were no surprises along the way. When patients understand the process, fear often becomes much smaller.
The Biggest Difference Wasn't Cosmetic
At one of his review appointments, I asked him what had changed the most since finishing treatment. His answer had nothing to do with the way his smile looked. He said the biggest difference was that he no longer thought about his teeth.
For years, he had been careful while eating, avoided chewing on certain sides, worried about food getting trapped and constantly noticed that something didn't feel quite right - now everything simply felt normal again. He could eat comfortably, clean his teeth easily and get on with his day without thinking about them at all.
To me, that's one of the greatest signs of successful treatment. Dentistry should become something patients don't have to think about anymore.
It's all about the end goal
Looking back, what I remember most isn't just the treatment itself.
It's the conversations we had throughout the journey. He never wanted perfection. He wanted honesty, quality and a smile that still felt like his own.
As dentists, it's easy to focus on procedures, technology and clinical results. Those things matter, of course. But what matters even more is listening.
When we understand what is truly important to someone, we can build a treatment plan around their goals instead of our idea of the perfect smile. Because in the end, the best dentistry isn't about creating a different person...
It's about helping someone feel like themselves again!
