Expert solutions for failing dental implants & complex re-treatment
The "All-on-4" treatment concept revolutionised dentistry over two decades ago. Because of this, we are now seeing a generation of patients who had their treatment 15 or 20 years ago and are facing new challenges.
While dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution, biology is not static. Over decades, you may experience gum recession, peri-implantitis (infection around the implant), or bone loss. You may feel your bridge becoming loose, or notice inflammation that wasn't there before.
If you are in this situation, you may feel incredibly anxious. You might fear that you are heading back to wearing removable dentures.
There is often another option.
The Challenge Of
Re-Treatment
Replacing old implants is significantly more complex than placing them for the first time. When a dental implant fails or needs to be removed, it often leaves a void in the jawbone. This means there is often less bone to work with than there was originally.
Many dentists will not touch these cases because of the risk and complexity involved. However, Complex Revision Dentistry is a cornerstone of our practice. We have the specific tooling, the surgical experience, and the advanced technology required to safely remove failed implants and rebuild your smile.

The Rescue Toolkit
We approach these cases with a full arsenal of advanced surgical options that allow us to succeed where standard implants might fail.
-
Safe Implant Removal: We utilise specialised piezoelectric surgery units and removal kits that allow us to gently remove failing implants while preserving as much of your remaining healthy bone as possible.
-
Zygomatic & Pterygoid Implants: If the bone in your upper jaw has been lost due to long-term implant use or infection, we can bypass the jawbone entirely. By anchoring implants into the cheekbone (Zygoma) or the dense bone at the back of the mouth (Pterygoid), we can provide a secure foundation for fixed teeth without needing the jawbone.
-
Advanced Bone Regeneration: If you wish to return to standard implants, we can employ extensive bone grafting techniques to "grow back" the foundation you have lost.
The Process: We Start Fresh
Just because this is a "redo" doesn't mean we rush the process. In fact, we take even more care.
We treat your revision case with the same detailed, bespoke approach as a new patient consultation.
-
The Deep Dive: We spend time understanding the history of your previous treatment. How long did it last? Why is it failing now? What are your goals for the next phase?
-
Forensic Analysis: We use CBCT scanning to analyze the bone quality and the position of the existing implants in 3D.
-
The Bespoke Plan: We don't just patch the problem. We formulate a unique treatment plan designed to secure your dental health for the next 20 years.
Our Promise: Keeping You Fixed
We understand that your biggest fear is likely "going back to a denture." While every case is unique, our primary goal in revision surgery is to keep you in fixed teeth. Whether through immediate replacement with Zygomatic implants or a staged approach, we work tirelessly to ensure you maintain your dignity and quality of life throughout the process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it painful to have implants removed?
Using modern removal techniques, taking an implant out is often less traumatic than taking a tooth out. We use sedation to ensure you are completely relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure.
Can you use my old bridge?
In some cases, we can modify your existing bridge to fit the new implants as a temporary measure. However, because the position of the new implants will likely be different, we usually design a brand new, stronger bridge to fit your new foundation.
My original dentist has retired. Can you help?
Absolutely. We see many patients who have been "orphaned" by their previous provider. We are happy to take over your care, obtain your old records if possible, and guide you forward.
